The latest Warhammer Underworlds release “Deathgorge”, comes 6 years after the first set “Shadespire”. In this short time the Underworlds format has grown in popularity and following. With over 60 warbands, several play formats and a plethora of card decks, there is something for everyone.
At Goldberry, Stuart and David have been getting to grips with the game and so far, we absolutely love it! For those of you who haven’t encountered the game yet, it’s a fast-paced tactical game played on a board where you pit your warband against your rival. There’s a range of deck building options that let you enhance your epic champions and reign victorious against your opponent.
The gameplay itself is simple, but really enjoyable. You play a number of “phases” that contain activations, where you choose what your fighters will do! It’s turn based, so you’ll be anticipating and reacting to your opponents every move. Playing your gambits and ploys at the right time can turn the battle in your favour. Playing tactically is key to earn your objective cards unlocking powerful upgrades to bestow upon your warriors!
We’ve summarised the reasons why we think Warhammer Underworlds is such a fantastic format.
Easy to setup and play – If your time is limited, it’s a relatively quick game to setup and rounds last on average around 45 minutes, so you have the chance to get a few games in.
Beginner or advanced – You can play a simplified version of the game or play advanced rules if you prefer, offering challenges for all player abilities.
Low model count – This helps in terms of the cost to acquire the models and the speed at which you can get something painted on the table. It also allows you to easily collect multiple warbands, so you can have different styles or play and keep your regular opponents guessing!
Deck building – This adds a great dimension to the game and can be the difference between triumph and defeat. The different formats also mean that you can just grab a rivals deck and go, merge your rivals deck with one of the universal decks or go wild and craft your own.
Stunning sculpts – The attention to detail on each model is beautiful and you’ll love painting these and seeing them dominate the tabletop.
Competitive play – If this is your thing, then Underworlds already has a fantastic competitive scene to get involved with.
